SPRINGTIME IN BOURNEMOUTH AND THE NEW FOREST

To herald the coming of spring we make our annual pilgrimage to our premier seaside resort, noted for its relaxing air and cliff scenery with pine-clad chines. During the afternoon we enjoy the varied landscape of the New Forest, roamed at will by ponies, donkeys, cattle and deer at a time of the year when the animals and spring flowers are coming to life. We stop for tea at Burley, in the heart of the forest before arriving home by approximately 8.00pm.

Enjoy this wonderful chocolate experience of sights, sounds, tastes and smells. An absolute treat for chocolate lovers. BATH - TIMELESS CITY OF GOLD

No matter how often we return to this city of culture and pleasure there is always something new to discover, particularly now that the ancient baths have been refurbished and a new 'Bath Spa Complex' has been opened. We have at least four hours in this World Heritage Site, surrounded by fine Georgian buildings, crescents, squares and shops as well as the most complete Roman remains in Britain. There is also the mediaeval Bath Abbey, outstanding museum of costume and the Jane Austen Centre, that explains Jane's life in Bath, her family and home. Home by approximately 8.30pm.

BOGNOR REGIS AND HARBOUR VIEWS

A tour that takes us through the Alice Holt Forest and across the South Downs to the quiet resort of Bognor Regis noted for its fine promenade and attractive gardens. Time for some lunch and a stroll along the promenade before driving around Chichester harbour to the delightful fishing village and artist haven of Bosham (tea). Home by approximately 8.00pm.

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

Today we shall take it gently via the scenic route to Shakespeare's Stratford. We travel through the Chiltern Hills and the Cotswolds via Edge Hill to arrive in Stratford for lunch. Stratford is situated along the banks of the River Avon and is renowned for its associations with Shakespeare, the world's greatest playwright. It's possible to visit many Shakespearian properties including the church where he was baptised and buried. You could take a guided tour around the town or enjoy a short boat trip on the river. Home by approximately 8.00pm.

FAVERSHAM MARKET AND FOLKESTONE

Stop for coffee in the picturesque and historic market town of Faversham. Time to enjoy the old-fashioned shopping centre before driving through the Kentish countryside to spend the afternoon in the seaside resort of Folkestone, the port from which tens of thousands of soldiers bound for the Great War left in 1914, never to return. They are commemorated by the newly erected 'Short Step Arch' standing at the top of the Leas, a beautiful cliff-top walk offering good views across the English Channel towards France. Interesting, old, narrow streets wind down the hill to the harbour. Home by approximately 8.00pm.

MILTON KEYNES SHOPPER OR BLETCHLEY PARK

The opportunity to either visit the fabulous Milton Keynes Shopping Centre or stay on the coach and spend the day at nearby Bletchley Park. Bletchley Park was once Britain's best kept secret and today the mansion is open as a heritage site and museum where we can explore the wide range of exhibitions and learn how its code-breaking successes helped to shorten World War II by around two years. Amongst the many exhibits are 'Colossus' the world's first computer, the hut where Alan Turing worked and an interesting collection about Winston Churchill. Home by approximately 7.00pm.

CHICHESTER AND PETWORTH HOUSE

A tour that combines the beauty of the South Downs National Park and the heritage of Chichester with the majesty of the collection at Petworth House. We stop for coffee at Guildford Cathedral and then drive across the South Downs to Chichester (lunch). It is a city renowned for its unusual Cathedral and shopping centre that contains a number of individual shops gathered about the old market cross that dates from 16th century. We spend the afternoon at Petworth House which has recently completed refurbishment and contains the finest collection of paintings, sculpture and carving in The National Trust, including works by Turner and the fabulous Grinling Gibbons carving contained in the opulent State Rooms and Grand Staircase. Time for tea at the house before arriving home by approximately 8.00pm.

A tour of the beautiful Cotswolds Hills while travelling back in time on a steam train on the 28-mile Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. Our journey takes us from Broadway to Cheltenham and back through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Cotswolds. The stretch to Broadway only opened in 2018 and the line commands wonderful views of nearby sleepy hamlets and villages with outstanding vistas of the Malvern Hills and beyond. The resort is also noteworthy for the newly opened Turner Art Gallery and many interesting arts and crafts shops in the Old Town. The defining architecture of the project is the building which takes its influence from glasshouses such as those at Kew and Wisley and features a 'Crystal Palace' glass atrium. We stop for lunch at Pol Hill before driving the short distance through the Kentish Highlands to Ide Hill where we find charming Emmetts Garden. Here we can take in the spectacular views across the Kentish Weald and enjoy the glorious shows of Spring flowers and shrubs at a time when the bluebells, for which Emmetts is renowned, are in bloom. There is time for tea in the Stable Tea Rooms before arriving home by approximately 7.00pm.

LICHFIELD AND THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL

After the success of last year's visit we return to the city of Lichfield renowned for its cathedral with its three spires, heritage centre, market and mediaeval streets. During the afternoon we stop for tea at the National Memorial Arboretum where over 300 different memorials remember both civilian and military personnel who gave their lives in the service of our country. Some of the latest memorials being the "Christmas Truce Memorial" and the "Afghanistan Memorial". However the centrepiece is the marvellous sculpture by Ian Rank-Broadley for the National Memorial. It is surrounded by 50,000 trees so whether you come to remember or simply to stroll amongst the trees you can be sure of an unforgettable visit. Home by approximately 7.30pm.
