Today we shall take a ride on a steam hauled train on the Icknield Line making a return journey from Chinnor to Princes Risborough and back. Set on the edge of the Chiltern Hills in attractive scenery not very far from home we shall enjoy the nostalgia of the yesteryear. The visit to Stamford last year for the biennial Georgian Festival was a great success. Today we shall visit Stamford on the day of its large Friday Market. Described as ‘the finest stone town in England’ it was the setting for the historical TV series Middlemarch. After stopping at Pidou near Calais for wines, beers or spirits we shall drive to PJ’s in Belgium renowned as the place to buy cheap tobacco products and chocolates. We shall then drive the short distance to Ostend – the Queen of seaside resorts. There are numerous pavement cafe?s, bars and restaurants nestling around the harbour and Fisherman’s Quay, the place for seafood. We have 21⁄2-3 hours in this vibrant resort. Ancient Delft – City of Art and Romance

We invite you to join us on a 4-day break to the exquisite medieval town of Delft in Holland famous for the painter Johannes Vermeer who was born and lived in Delft, and the distinctive blue and white pottery which is made in the town. With its canal-lined narrow streets and remarkable buildings Delft has become very popular and boasts many bars and restaurants and canalside walks. Our hotel is the modern 4-star Shanghai Hotel situated three miles from the centre. The tour is on a half-board basis and the hotel offers Eastern hospitality with Western 4-star comfort.
Thursday: We take the morning crossing to Calais before following the motorways through France and Belgium into Holland. We travel by way of Ghent and Antwerp, crossing into Holland at Breda, then after crossing the River Maas drive around Rotterdam to Delft, situated near The Hague, Holland’s administrative capital, to arrive at our hotel in the early evening.
Friday and Saturday: We shall spend the next two days exploring the medieval town of Delft, discovering its many charms. There will be the opportunity of taking a canal boat ride around Delft, surely the best way of seeing the sights. We also visit the Vermeer Centre, a museum dedicated to the life and work of the artist who lived in the city that was the inspiration for his art. We shall also have the opportunity of visiting the Delft Blue Earthenware Workshop and enjoy the shopping, bars, restaurants and hospitality of this most popular and friendly town. Other sights such as the Prinsenhof Museum and the Nieuwke Kirk and Oude Kirk may also be visited being situated within the town, among the canals.
Sunday: All too soon we must leave Delft and return whence we came via the motorways through Holland, Belgium and France to board the evening ferry from Calais to Dover, returning back to Enfield by approximately 9.00pm.

After lunch we shall drive through the Kent Marshes and into the Garden of England to our tea stop at the pretty village of Tenterden – The Jewel of The Weald. This year Chatsworth has a new visitor route through the house showing us newly restored galleries with displays of rare treasures. As this is the time of year for well dressing we shall be on the look out for some of the best dressed wells. On Saturday we stop at Ashbourne (lunch) and Tideswell (tea) whilst we spend Sunday morning at Chatsworth commencing our homeward journey after time for lunch in the restaurant. Today we visit Highclere Castle near Newbury in Berkshire, the location of the famous TV drama, Downton Abbey. Highclere Castle is the home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is a country house built in the Jacobethan style with the grounds designed by Capability Brown. So come with us and enjoy exploring what it is really like behind the scenes of ‘the real Downton Abbey’. A lunch break will be made in Newbury before spending the afternoon at Highclere Castle where there will be time for tea before arriving home by approximately 7.30pm.

A tour that takes us through the New Forest to the attractive town of Christchurch (lunch), dominated by its huge church and located at the mouth of the River Avon. Situated between the estuaries of the Rivers Avon and Stour, Christchurch is a haven for yachtsmen. Suitably refreshed we shall drive to Highcliffe Castle for a cream tea perched on the cliffs overlooking Christchurch Bay. Built by Lord Stuart de Rothesay between 1831 and 1836 Highcliffe Castle is one of the most important surviving houses of the Romantic and Picturesque style. We return through the New Forest. Today we shall travel to Kent’s ‘Garden Coast’ stopping for refreshments en route. We shall stop for lunch at Hythe with its wide promenade overlooking the English Channel. A small coastal market town on the edge of Romney Marsh, Hythe was once a bustling port being one of the famous Cinque Ports so-named by Edward the Confessor for defence purposes. During the afternoon we shall take a ride on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. The narrow gauge light railway runs 14 miles along the coast from Hythe to Dungeness and is the smallest public railway in the world. After our ride, which takes about an hour, there will be time for tea before returning to Enfield by approximately 8.00pm.
