THE THREE JEWELS OF FLANDERS Ypres, Bruges & Ostend

Pick Up Group: M
Fare: £275.00
(includes ferry fares)
Our tour is based at the 3-star Best Western Flanders Lodge at Ypres in the Westhoek province of Belgium, a virtually unspoilt part of Flanders bordering on France and the North Sea.
Friday: Drive to Ypres via the ferry crossing from Dover to Calais and the short drive across West Flanders. We shall have free time during the afternoon to explore this once prosperous medieval town and to settle into our hotel.
Ypres: The town found itself just to the west of the front line in 1914 at the beginning of the Great War and was demolished by shelling over the next few years. When peace returned the town was reconstructed as it had once been and today the town acts as a centre for visitors to the battlefields and military cemeteries. You can visit the "In Flanders Field" Museum which provides a moving story of the First World War, and the Menin Gate, a huge stone arch with the names of the missing soldiers of the Battle of Ypres, where the Last Post is played every evening. Ypres has a lively town centre with many pavement cafes and restaurants all overshadowed by the imposing cathedral. We shall then return to our hotel for our evening meal.
Saturday: After making the short journey across the countryside of West Flanders we shall spend the rest of the day in the City of Bruges. Steeped in history, this "Venice of the North" is a true romantic haven with its medieval buildings, museums, enchanting cobbled streets and network of canals. Centred on the Market Square there are many pavement cafes and a wide variety of shops selling, amongst other things, lace and chocolates. We shall return to our hotel in the early evening.
Sunday: After a leisurely breakfast we shall drive to Ostend, the "Queen of Flanders". Set in the middle of the Belgian coast, Ostend is an attractive, modern seaside resort with its wide, safe sandy beaches. It is also a fishing port with its bars and restaurants set around "Fisherman's Quay". We shall return to Calais for the ferry to Dover, arriving home by approximately 9.00pm.
