The opportunity to visit the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre that was set up in 1987 initially to provide a home for chimpanzees used as props by Spanish beach photographers. Monkey World assists governments around the world to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. At the Centre refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect are rehabilitated into natural living groups. There are refreshment facilities at the Centre and the coach will travel via Poole on the inward and outward journeys. Home by approximately 8.00pm.

During the Rose Fair the whole town takes on a festive atmosphere celebrating its horticultural heritage. The jewel in the crown is the magnificent 900-year-old parish church of St Peter and St Paul that is the setting for breath-taking displays of traditional flowers and exotic blooms. You will be able to wander amongst a variety of stalls selling local produce of fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, cakes and preserves as well as crafts. Home by approximately 6.30pm.

We stop for lunch at Pol Hill, a garden centre with a host of shopping opportunities. We spend the afternoon at Chartwell, home to Sir Winston Churchill situated in the beautiful North Downs. The rooms have been left as they were during his lifetime and evoke his career and interests with pictures, documents and personal mementoes. Two rooms are given over to an exhibition of his extensive gifts and uniforms. Terraced gardens descend towards a lake whilst the garden studio contains many of Sir Winston’s paintings. Home by approximately 7.00pm.

Tall Ships at Sunderland and the Cities of York and Newcastle

A special tour to enable us to enjoy the spectacle that is the ‘Tall Ships Race’ which this year is hosted by Sunderland on the River Wear. We stay at the Newcastle Novotel which as well as having all the usual facilities also boasts an indoor swimming pool, sauna and fitness centre. It is the perfect place to relax after a day’s sightseeing which on this holiday includes the Tall Ships and eternal City of York.
Wednesday: Northwards along the Great North Road stopping for coffee at the Brampton Garden Centre, lunch in Newark and tea at Wetherby Services arriving at our hotel during the late afternoon.
Thursday: Whole-day visit to Sunderland on a day when the ‘Tall Ships Race’ visit’s the Wear. About 100 fully rigged sailing ships offer a magnificent and rare spectacle by the marina and historic quayside. There will be a full programme of entertainment on the quayside with time to visit the Maritime Heritage Workshop.
Friday: Spend the day along the banks of the Tyne in Gateshead and Newcastle and visit the ‘Angel of the North’, walk across the world’s only tilting bridge and compare the Victorian architecture of Grey Street with the modern excellence of Eldon Square Shopping Centre.
Saturday: Drive direct to the city of York where we shall have at least four hours for sightseeing and lunch, returning home during the afternoon along the Great North Road, stopping for tea at the Peterborough Services. The tour is scheduled to arrive back in Enfield Town by approximately 8.00pm.

ST IVES MARKET AND ISLE OF ELY

Outward along the Great North Road, stopping for coffee at the Willington Garden Centre and on to the attractive town of St Ives to enjoy the large Monday Market. The town is attractively situated on the banks of the Great River Ouse that is crossed by an unusual 14th-century bridge, still retaining its original bridge chapel. After lunch we drive to Ely whose cathedral is regarded as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Fens, its outstanding feature being the unusual ‘Octagon’ built to replace the Norman Tower that collapsed in 1322. The nave’s painted ceiling and magnificent Lady Chapel are also noteworthy. Home by approximately 7.30pm.

We are going to join the Kent and East Sussex Railway at Tenterden for a steam train journey through the unspoilt countryside of the Rother Valley to Bodiam Castle. On the return journey a fish and chip lunch is served at our table with tea or coffee. There is also time to visit the Colonel Stephens Railway Museum at Tenterden Station before we board our train. Tudor and Georgian buildings surround the town creating the beautiful look that Hitchin is so famous for. Today we visit Beaulieu one of the first stately homes opened to the public. Set in the New Forest, Beaulieu has many attractions on offer. There is Palace House, home of the Montagu family since 1538 and built around the Great Gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey. Also, the National Motor Museum where over 250 vehicles tell the story of motoring in Britain from its origins to the motorway. The Gardens, Secret Army Exhibition, Beaulieu Abbey and Exhibition can all be enjoyed along with a ride on an open-top bus and monorail.
