A tour that stops for coffee at Bearstead Garden Centre before driving along the Kentish lanes to arrive in the old country town of Tenterden for lunch. The town has a High Street lined with Georgian houses, unusual shops and a busy market. We spend the afternoon at Pashley Manor, where the ‘Tulip Festival’ displays massed flowers and decorative art on a tulip theme. There are thousands of flowers in the garden whilst the interior of the Great Hall has a magnificent display of floral art, arranged by ‘Bloms Bulbs’ – Chelsea Gold Medal winners. Time for tea in the cafe. Home by approximately 7.00pm.

THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS ‘Land of Legend’

There is much to see in Scotland that it is not surprising that we return year after year to revisit favourite haunts and explore further afield. Here is another excellent touring holiday full of the magic that is Scotland. The holiday is based at the 4-star Mercure Hotel Inverness ideally situated on the banks of the river Ness in the town centre. Saturday: Travelling northwards along the Great North Road stopping for coffee at Peterborough Services, lunch in Wetherby and tea at Rheged on the edge of the Lake District. Our overnight stop is at the Gretna Hall Hotel, Gretna Green.

Sunday: Over the border at Gretna Green and into the Scottish Lowlands, stopping for coffee at Moffat and after travelling around Glasgow and Stirling, lunch at Crieff before driving along the rugged Sma’ Glen to reach our tea stop in Pitlochry. From here we follow the A9 route around the Cairngorms to reach Inverness in the late afternoon. 

Monday: Free day in Inverness with optional cruise along Loch Ness to enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery from the centre of the loch and perhaps have a close encounter with the legendary monster. 

Tuesday: A new excursion that follows the A9 along the wild North Sea Coast through Wick and John-O-Groats (lunch) to visit the Castle of Mey, beloved holiday home of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. There is time to tour the interior and enjoy the garden that gave her such delight and inspiration, before returning to our hotel through the Caithness countryside. 

Wednesday: Whole day tour visiting the quiet North West Coastline stopping at Ullapool (lunch) and then across the ‘Wilds of Sutherland’ to stop for tea at the Falls of Shin Visitor Centre. 

Thursday: Travel southwards through the Central Highlands by way of Killecrankie (coffee), Stirling Castle (lunch) and Jedburgh (tea) staying overnight at Newcastle Airport. 

Friday: Drive direct to Durham with time to visit the impressive Cathedral and unique market and shopping centre before returning home along the Great North Road, a stop for tea being made at the Grantham Services. The tour is scheduled to arrive back in Enfield by approximately 7.30pm.

SALISBURY AND THE DOWNTON MAY

The opportunity to either spend the day in Salisbury, renowned for its great cathedral, museums and old fashioned open-air market and shopping centre, or break for lunch in Salisbury and spend the afternoon at the Downton Cuckoo Fair. This is a special event held to welcome the arrival of summer. It is noted for its hundreds of stalls and street activities, including maypole dancing and Morris dancing. PORTSMOUTH HERITAGE AND GUNWHARF QUAYS

The opportunity to explore the history of the Royal Navy by visiting Mary Rose, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and Action Stations in the ‘Historic Dockyard’. Alternatively, enjoy the designer outlet village at Gunwharf Quays, take a lift to the top of the 500ft. Spinnaker Tower and walk the Millenium Promenade to Old Portsmouth where we can visit the cathedral and soak up the atmosphere of the ancient streets that once were the haunt of ‘press gangs’. During the afternoon we drive across the White Cliffs of Dover to stop for tea at the newly opened ‘Battle of Britain Memorial’ Home by approximately 7.30pm.

A tour that takes us along the by-ways of the Bedfordshire Heartlands and shows us the interesting villages of Old Warden and Cardington before stopping for lunch at Bedford on Market Day. Our rural ride continues by way of the villages of Podington and Bozeat to Olney, famous for its Pancake Race, where there is time for tea and a look around the church – whose rector composed Amazing Grace – before returning home by way of the Duke of Bedford’s Woburn Estate. After stopping at Pidou near Calais for wines, beers or spirits we shall drive to PJ’s in Belgium renowned as the place to buy cheap tobacco products and chocolates.   We shall then drive the short distance to Ostend – the Queen of seaside resorts. There are numerous pavement cafes, bars and restaurants nestling around the harbour and Fisherman’s Quay, the place for seafood. We have 2½-3 hours in this vibrant resort. The opportunity to visit the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre that was set up in 1987 initially to provide a home for chimpanzees used as props by Spanish beach photographers. Monkey World assists governments around the world to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. At the Centre refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect are rehabilitated into natural living groups.
